How The Time Flies

My time off is coming to a close. I double checked with my doctor and she said I am good to go back to work on Monday. My work is cautious and will likely wean me into my duties. Even if I will need to leave early due to exhaustion, I have been assured it will be no problem. My ostomy supply bag will need to be in my car in case of emergencies.

My JP port was taken out this morning. Now I know that a good amount of lingering pain I still had was due to the port pulling on my skin. Quality of life improvement! 

Also, my menstrual cycle started today. No medication has been needed to treat any pain.  I took some yesterday though due to either the elongated walk through the grocery store or premenstrual cramps.  The only other time I took meds before yesterday was a week ago.  My daughter unintentionally pressed her body weight into my abdomen to get my attention and I cried out in pain. Since then, a barrier pillow is nearby at all times to protect me if need be...

Side note, I am so ready to be done with this stoma and bag situation. I had a leak the first night after a doctor's office here in Louisville fitted me with a new type of bag, the Coloplast's Mio.  Then I did my initial brand I was used to, Hollister, but I did a convex type.  Two days later, another leak sprung.  It always leaks around my belly button.  As a side note, showers are best when you have no bag. I feel the most free and I feel like Fredrick, the stoma, gets more clean. But I must keep in mind what my bowel surgeon says, "Your stoma is happy in its own filth."  It is the skin around my stoma that I really need to clean; the fecal matter will chemically burn my skin if the ostomy bag seal is broken. I was fitted with a convex Mio today with a wrap around belt for extra security. They also ordered a sample box from Coloplast. With Hollister and Coloplast's samples combined, I will maybe not need to order any other supplies myself!  Plus the extra supplies the hospital gave me will cushion my ostomy reserves.

The Day Before

 We are hours away from operation code name: drain the swamp.  The timeline shifted a few times, but my surgery starts at 9:30 CT (10:30 EST).  I went to the PACE clinic for the pre-OP appointment where they did bloodwork and went through my personal health history.  I handed them my Covid-19 test results, which they scanned into the system.  I got my antibiotics from the pharmacy and the antiseptic soap.  Then the hard part began: the bowel cleanse.  I despise bowel cleanses.  About 5 hours later, I have been having pretty clear bowel movements, did my first antiseptic shower, and are wearing clean jammies.   My last antibiotic meds will be taken soon and then no drinking until 6:15.  The last drink I will have is a super carbohydrate drink to keep my body going during the anesthesia.  I will have one last antiseptic shower before arriving at the hospital at 7:30 CT. Long Overdue Update

First of all, THINGS HAVE BEEN GOOD!  I know I have not posted in over a year, but I am alive.   The recovery from the ileostomy reversal went well.  I will admit, it was a good thing I insisted on having adult diapers with me on the road trip home from the hospital in St. Louis.  I lasted about an hour into the 5 hour long drive before needing to change myself.  My bowels took the full 5-6 weeks of estimated time off to regulate.  The first week was the most difficult.  The second week was pretty easy until that Saturday when I had an "Oh shit, run to the bathroom now!" moment.  I had been hoping that those moments were over with since that week had been so smooth up until that point.  I had a few video calls with my gastroenterologist who was happy with my recovery and wished me the best.  She was one of the best doctors I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing.  She was the right amount of professional and tough love. Let Me Out!

Captain's log: October 4th 2020, 1800 hours approximately American Central Time. This is day 5 of my journey at Mercy Hospital. They have still been monitoring my JP port since it is still showing creamy chyle. Fortunately, it has been more serous (reddish yellow fluid) in nature as the bowel surgeon prefers. I have all my discharge stickers on my door. The one thing that is holding me back is the fact that I need an RN to visit me at my home in Louisville, Kentucky. I am not sure if it is the port that upgrades my medical professional to RN status, but it is what it is.  Discharge WILL BE tomorrow.  Other than still having the port attached to me, I will have the stoma bag as well. The ostomy nurse came by today and I successfully changed out my stoma bag on my own (for the most part).
